Sicilian coastline

During our stay in Sicily, we were lucky to see three beaches, yet each of them was different.

The most impressive beach was the one nearby Porto Empedocele. You can admire the beautiful white limestone cliffs, called Scala dei Turchi (The Turkish Steps). The name refers to Turkish piracy which affected the land in past. When you look out from the cliffs, you can see a breathtaking view over the turquoise sea. During the walk we found a lot of lovely shells. The Turkish Steps have been waiting for 10 years to be accepted as a natural heritage by UNESCO.

The second beach, which we visited, was in Mondello, near Palermo. It used to be a fishing village, but later it has become a villa resort. The Mondello beach is perceived as the most beautiful in Sicily, because of the astonishing landscape of sea surrounded by mountains. The sight of the beachgoers is also caught by the 19th century building of steam room, built on stilts. We decided to make use of our stay and have a swim, as the sea water wasn’t really warm (about 18-19 Celsius degrees, like our Baltic Sea), we were in a minority. Though there weren’t any shells, as by Scala dei Turchi, we discovered surprising blue creatures. No one knew what they were. Read more about valella vallella here. The beach in Mondello is public, close to a road, it differs from the wild coastline of Scala dei Turchi.

In Cefalu, there was our last beach, which was quite close to an ancient town and in neighborhood of an uneventful road.  The town - Cefalu was built on a step rock mountain. We found the beach attractive, as it was wide, large and empty. Instead of shells and stones, there was a plenty of seaweed.

Although the beaches were various, it was a great pleasure to spend time on each of them.
