New sports disciplines

Each of our project international meetings involves games and sports competitions. Are you aware that though, there is a wide range of sports disciplines, the number is still increasing? For example, in the Olympic Games in Tokyo (2020) five new categories are going to be introduced:
baseball (very popular in Japan), karate (with Japanese origins), skateboarding, climbing and surfing.

Teams of researchers, coaches, scientists, marketing specialists and ordinary people work on a new sports discipline – sometimes their outcome is splendid, but it happens that the result of their work is just an oddity.
One of the newest sports is Nordic Walking, which has been being practised for 15 years. It is a cakewalk – also literally as it is based on movements of crawling babies – running is demanding, but walking with the poles doesn’t require much effort. The scientists confirm that Nordic Walking has got positive influence on your respiratory system, body posture and mood.

In Poland, zumba has gained ground. It is a mixture of lively Latino dances with the intensity of aerobics. The key to its success is the enjoyment and quick effects, as zumba workout is quite challenging.

However, in some parts of the world you can come across a lot of astonishing sports. For example, in Finland wife-carrying is popular, a man has to come through an obstacle course while carrying his wife on his back, one may win as much beer as his wife weighs. The beginning of this strange discipline dates 19th century, it is believed that there was a Finnish robber, who stole wives and ran away with them on his back to the forest. Whether this legend is true or not, we don’t know, but the Finns organised such completion in 1922 for the first time.

The British have created lawn mower racing, there were even The World Championships in it.

Sometimes two traditional disciplines are combined, would you like to play chess boxing? In France boxing was connected with chess. The contestants take part in 11 rounds – box and chess in turns. Can you imagine playing chess after having tens of blows?

These are just few examples of new sports types, I wonder how the Olympic Games will look like in 50 years. What will we play during our next meeting in Bieruń? Will we play traditional games or will we make up something completely new?
