Wawel Castle, the heart of Cracow.

By Elisa Rodríguez Rodríguez, (4th year ESO)

Wawel Royal Castle is a Gothic castle located in Krakow, Poland. Built at the behest of Casimiro III the Great, it consists of several structures located around a central patio. It was rebuilt by Jogaila and Eduviges I in the 14th century.

Wawel Castle and Wawel Hill are Poland's most important historical and cultural sites. It was the residence of the kings of Poland for centuries and symbol of the Polish state. Now, it is one of the best art museums in the country. Founded in 1930, it comprises ten departments, in which there are paintings, sculptures, engravings, textiles, goldsmiths, weapons, armor, ceramics, Maissen porcelain and furniture. With seven specialized conservation studies, the museum is also an important art conservation center.

It has been listed as Patrimony of Humanity in the World Heritage Site List of the UNESCO since 1978.
The current building comprises Romanesque fragments and important Gothic elements. Its present aspect dates mainly to the period of the reigns of Alexander Jagellón and of Segismundo I the Old.
Some of our colleagues from different countries were impressed with its facade.

This castle is a reminder of the past of Poland.
The interior is one of the best parts of the castle.
In short, if we want to know about the history of Poland, we must visit this beautiful and spectacular castle. And if you do not want to visit it but see Krakow, you have to go there, the views are splendid.
