AN IDOL IN MY LIFE: Javier Gómez Noya, five times World Champion in triathlon.

By Lucía Loureiro Cela (4th year ESO).
Javier Gómez Noya was born in Basilea (Switzerland), in March 25th, 1983, but he moved to Ferrol, Spain, when he was 3 months old.
Javier studied and started practising sports in Pontevedra.
He discovered triathlon in 1998. He made his debut in the Olympic-distance triathlon at the age of 15. Javi's evolution was extremely fast; he won practically all the triathlon contests in which he participated in his category.

However, he has gone through more than one obstacle on his climb to the top.
In December 1999, the medical services of the CSD detected a cardiac anomaly and he was banned to represent Spain in international competitions. Javi was not going to let that stop him, and with the support of different world-ranked cardiology specialists, he decided to fight to recover his international license and demonstrate he could train and compete at the highest level.
In November 2003 Javi finally recovered his license.
With only 3 weeks training, , he went to New Zealand and won the under-23 World Championship.

This result brought Javi's sports career to a turning point.
He decided to attempt to qualify for the Olympic Games in Athens. He competed in his first European Championship (Valencia) and World Championship (Madeira) achieving excellent 8th places in both.
In 2006, he won 3 ITU World Cups.
Since 2006, Javi has accumulated one of the best records ever achieved in triathlon history: Javi is 4 times and reigning ITU World Champion, Olympic Silver Medallist in London 2012, Ironman 70.3 World Champion, three times ITU European Champion, X-Terra World Champion, ITU Half distance European Champion, and twice Champion of the prestigious Hy-vee Triathlon together with other top results including 14 ITU World Cup and 10 World Series wins.

Javi still enjoys triathlon and his focus is now turned to achieving his dream of becoming Olympic Champion in Rio de Janeiro 2016.
Unfortunately, Javi couldn't go to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio because he had his elbow broken in a bike accident.
In the link below, you can watch an interesting interview we carried out to him on October 24th, 2016 when he was attending a talk in Narón, together with a few other athletes. We'd like to thank Agrupación Deportiva Náutico de Narón and especially Mr. Amando Guerrero Gil who were the organizers of the event for their help in the arrangements of the interview.
