It's
been fourteen years since the premiere of 'Lilo & Stich', fifteen since the terrorist attacks to the Twin Towers in New York. Surely,
everyone remembers the movie that thrilled its young viewers as much
as the adults who accompanied them to the cinema. The story of
friendship recounted by Disney through cartoons is touching to
everyone. The film depicts the friendship between an orphan Hawaiian
girl and a blue very naughty alien. So far so good. But, before the
film was released, many substantial changes were made to delete the
violent scenes that the original version contained.
Some
of the changes and additions are justified but others may seem an
exaggeration. Most violent scenes take place in the home of the
Hawaiian sisters (two of the main characters in the film) when a huge alien character called Jumba is trying
to catch Lilo's pet, which is actually a genetic experiment that has
escaped from an alien planet and landed on Hawaii by chance. This
chase ends up in a shattered house.
From
a Swiss army knife to the 11-S
One of the scenes which were adapted from the original version
depicts Jumba throwing dishes towards the ceiling to capture Stitch,
which was the mission of the two aliens (Jumba and lieutenant
Pleakley) on Earth. In the original scene, Jumba is trying to catch
the experiment (Stich) by shooting a firearm. This change may be a
little exaggerated, we all know that aliens have weapons...
Jumba looks a somewhat violent character if we analyse him before the
final edition. He is involved in most of the changes in the film
because of his unorthodox methods to capture the creature. In another
scene, he throws Lilo and her pet a multi-purpose knife with an ax, a
saw and a dart which doesn't reach them and ends up embedded on a
door.
This
sequence could trigger dangerous ideas into children's minds so it
was banned from the children's version and replaced by a weapon
composed of a comb, a toothbrush and toothpaste.
Another
controversial secene is the one that ends up in the explosion of the
Hawaiian sisters' house. It isn't the same situation that the house
explodes because Stitch opens the gas valve and Jumba fires a weapon
that the house blows up because there is a carrot blocking the muzzle
of Jumba's weapon.
Strange
as it may seem there is a scene in the original version which
couldn't be included in the final one because it resembled the
terrorist attacks against the Twin Towers in New York on 11th
September 2001 too much. The film was released on June 21st 2002 and,
in that sequence, Nany, Lilo's sister, and some aliens get hold of a
747 airliner to try and free Lilo who has been kidnapped by the
villain of the film.
The aircraft flies amongst several skyscrapers,
terrorizing the citizens and vandalizing some of the buildings.
Therefore, the similitude is clear. The location of the scene was
changed from a city full of skyscrapers to a beach in Hawaii and the
airliner was replaced by an alien spacecraft.
Now,
the original version is available on the Internet so that anyone can
compare.
Some
other films had to be adapted too as a result of the 11-S attacks in
order not to hurt people's feelings. A few examples are: Men in Black
2, 2 chapters in the Pokemon series, The Incredibles, the spin-off of
The X-Files: 'The Lone Gunmen' was cancelled because of the attacks
as an aircraft was highjacked and a group of terrorists tried to
crash it into the World Trade Center.
