Neo-gothic is an architectural
movement that started in the late 1740s in England. It became popular rapidly
in the early 19th century, trying to revive medieval Gothic
architecture, in contrast to the neoclassical
styles which were popular at the time. This Gothic Revival displays
characteristics from the original Gothic style, including decorative patterns, finials, lancet windows, hood
mouldings, label stops and others.
When we visited Gothenburg and climbed up to
the Skansen Kronan, from the top of the hill, we could see a beautiful church
in the distance. It was Oscar
Fredrik Church.
OSCAR FREDRIK CHURCH
This is a church located
in Olivedal (between the iron market and Linneplatsen) in Gothenburg, Sweden.
It was built by Helgo Zetterwall and erected in red brick in 1890. Belonging to
the Gothenburg Oscar Fredrik Parish of the Church of Sweden,
it was opened on Easter Sunday in 1893. Its style is neo gothic , but the
influence is not the Nordic gothic. You’d rather say the style resembles more
the one found in the large cathedrals down in the continental Europe. It’s considered one of the best exponents of
this style in Sweden.
The church and the parish have got their name from king Oscar II (Oscar Fredrik
is his full name, 1829-1907).
The Oscar Fredrik church
is a very beautiful church with a beautiful architectural design. Some
characteristics which catch your eye since the first time you see it are: its outside decoration showing a lined façade
in red and dark grey, which is finished in a copper line. This green line
(because of metal deterioration) borders the roof and makes the silhouette even
more outstanding. The building displays many towers and the roof shows a nice
design in a brighter colour The large
lancet windows which adorn the side galleries create a very light atmosphere
inside. I liked it so much.
The church is open to the public and it offers some guided visits as
well.
