A Trip into the Past: Monterozzi Necropolis

A group of students from I.E.S. de Catabois in Ferrol have travelled to Bassano Romano in Italy as part of an exchange of students during the present scholastic year 2018/2019. One of the most interesting places we visited during our stay was the town of Tarquinia and the Etrurian necropolis of Monterozzi, which is located in the town outskirts.

Monterozzi has about 6,000 tombs which are classified as: external tombs or underground chamber tombs. The external ones are more ancient and display funny shapes as if they were huge mush-rooms of the Boletus family. The corpse of the dead was incinerated and the ashes were put in clay made funerary urns which were kept inside the stoned-coffin like the one in the photograph.

Lake Vico is a lake that is located near Bassano Romano (Italy), the place where we took part in an exchange of students this year. Its origin is volcanic and it is a natural reserve so it is very beautiful because there are a lot of trees and many birds of different species.

Exchange of students IIS A. Meucci (Bassano Romano) and I.E.S. de Catabois (Ferrol)

Along the present scholastic year, students from I.E.S. de Catabois in Ferrol (Spain) and IIS A. Meucci in Bassano Romano (Italy) have been participating in an exchange of students and have been getting to know each other via Whatsapp, email and other digital media while having met in two occassions.

Consumópolis at I.E.S de Catabois: recycling and reusing to make new products.

CONSUMÓPOLIS: INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT.

Through the present year, our school, I.E.S. de Catabois in Ferrol, Spain, has been taking part in a project called ‘Consumópolis’. We consider it a preparation for an Erasmu+ KA we have applied for, which is called ‘Recyclart’.

This project was born to make the students aware of the importance of recycling, reducing and reusing so that they realize how our lives can change for the better and how we can keep sustainability at acceptable levels thanks to recyclage.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE COLOSSEUM.

When we went to Rome in our last school exchange of students, we were in the Vatican a very cool place. After that, we saw the city from a bus where a tourist guide was explaining things about the city, which is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Life in Italy: Sutri.

Hello my name is Óscar. Today I will tell you how was my experience in Italy. When we got to the airport in Italy, all the families of our Italian friends and their two teachers were waiting for us.

After that, we all went to the homes of our Italian friends, but all the Italians lived in different villages. My Italian friend, Alessandra, lived in a town called Sutri. When we arrived home, her whole family gave me a great welcome and I was very surprised.

                        

Foreign Country, Foreign Family

Me and some boys and girls from my school were part of an exchange with students from Prague. They were here (in Ferrol) in February. It was really funny but it was difficult to start talking with my partner Marie.
We travelled to Prague about three weeks ago and I really liked the city. It has got beautiful old buildings and, from the top of them or from high zones, you can see how a lot of these buildings are very pointy, with large spiky towers. It’s really beautiful when you get this view of all the city.

 

Something that surprised me was that, when we arrived, it was snowing. I was very excited about it and I think Prague is more beautiful with snow.

A group of students and teachers from IES de Catabois in Ferrol visited Prague last March as part of an exchange of students between our school and Arcibiskupské Gymnázium, which is a secondary school located in the Vinohrady quarter, quite close to the city centre.

During the days we spent there, we did lots of activities and visited many places. Some of the most relevant ones were explained to us by some of the Czech students involved in the exchange. Below, you can watch a video which shows some of the activities and the explanations our hosts gave us.

Prague: A Fairy Tale city.

This year we´ve been lucky: we took part in a foreign exchange with a school from Prague, seventeen of us and fifteen Czech students. They came to our school and houses in February, and we returned the visit in March, the week before Easter.

                                   
THE VISITS:
The first day we arrived late, but we had already booked the apartments for the first night. Next morning, all of us were surprised at how soon the sunrise was, and went to the most famous bridge in Prague, Charles Bridge, before breakfast. It was less than five minutes from the apartment!.  

 

My Experience in Prague.

The foreign exchange I took part in this year with the boys and girls from Prague was an unforgettable experience. Despite the cold,we could go to a lot of amazing places.
The first day, we arrived in the evening and we slept in an apartment. We had dinner in a tasty restaurant which was next to our apartment. We ordered a lot of drinks and we spent a lot of money because, for example, a bottle of water (a small one) cost 4 euro! When we had finished dinner and were going to the apartment it started to snow. We stayed at the apartment and noticed that my suitcase was open. We called the boys and one of them came and slept at our apartment.

Two weeks ago, me and other fifteen Spanish teenagers had the chance to travel to Prague (Czech Republic) and be part of an amazing exchange programme.
It was quite an experience to me because, first of all, I had never been outside of Spain and I just took one plane when I was seven years old. At first, it was amazing to me to see everything in another language (which was almost impossible to understand to a Spanish person) and to see a completely different lifestyle, but, in the end, I got used to it.

Romania: Looking to the future

Taking into account its communist past and all it meant to the country, Romania has already travelled a stretch of the road to democracy, and, therefore, a way to modernization, improvements on road infrastructure, education and agriculture... Some towns and cities have been restored recently, becoming attractive spots to the visitor, like Oradea, for example.

ARE WE THE SAME?

In a recent exchange of students to Romania and Budapest, we met a lot of people, teachers and students from the different countries which are taking part in our project: Romania (obviously), Poland, Sweden, Turkey and Italy. And in Budapest… In Budapest, we met a lot of people, but almost no one was Hungarian... When we arrived there, we were surprised because it was like our city (Ferrol), but much bigger and with really nice buildings.

Where does the beauty of a city reside? In its history? In its people? These are two valid answers but where you can perceive its beauty the most is in its architecture, and the city of Budapest dominates this matter.

WHERE ICE NEVER MELTS...

Scarisoara glacier and ice cave.

1165 metres over the sea level, the Scarisoara Glacier is still standing there to be admired. The giant block of ice is one of the glaciers which hasn't melted since the Ice Age. Even though it has never disappeared, its shapes are in continuous change. In the summer, a few centimetres of the ice layer melts while in the winter, with the new snow and the freezing temperatures, it grows up into amazing renovated forms.

                       

The Jewish heritage in Budapest and Cracow.

The Jewish heritage in Budapest:

The Jewish district of Budapest is exciting and tragic too. It has got the second biggest synagogue in the world but, as well, it was a guetto where the Nazis forced the Jews to live, in times of the Second World War and the Holocaust. The Jewish district is on the bank of the east bank of the Danube river.

AMUSING VISIT TO ORADEA TV STATION

In an incredible trip to Rumania last May 2017, we, the participants in the Erasmus+ project: What's New on the News? visited many places that we liked. One of them was the television in Oradea.

  

Visit to the Schindler Factory in Cracow.

The Schindler factory is located in the Zablocie district in Cracow, within walking distance from Plac Bohaterow Getta (in Podgorze). Today, it is a museum which displays all the historical period since the trigger of Second World War till the Soviet occupation of Poland.               

   

 

The factory welcomes the visitor with a large plaque which reads: 'Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire'. It was erected by the Jewish Community Council of Cracow and Students and Faculty of Albion College (Michigan, USA) as you can see in the photograph.
