There are several underground cities in the Cappadocia region in Turkey.They are at Özkonak, Mazıköy and several other places, but the most interesting ones now open to visitors are the ones South of Nevşehir at Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu.
In 2014 an enormous underground city was discovered beneath Nevşehir's hilltop fortress in the city center. The area once marked for residental development,now has protected archeological status. It will be some years before this discovery is opened to visitors. These underground cities were excavated as early as the Hittie times. Wine presses,oil storage,cooking-places,Rolling-stone doors,deep wells even churches were carved out of rock so that people could live for weeks or months underground.A historical underground Orthodox church has also been found in Nevşehir.The Nevşehir Municipality said the church is very significiant for the history of the Orthodox faith, as it is one of the largest underground churches found in the Cappadocia region.
During the urban transformation in Nevşehir, excavations began for the greatest underground city was discovered by chance .It is stated that just below Nevşehir, the anthropogist Mevlit Coşkun provided all kinds of support to the studies initated under scientific responsibility. The underground city that has been unearthedhas an indispensable importance in terms of Cappadocia and Turkey tourism. The mayor stated that the aim of the world's largest undergroundcity which has a great interest in both national amd international media, is to provide the tourism service in a short time as a whole.
