DONALD TUSK - EU'S NEW CHAIRMAN

by Maria Stachoń, Gimnazjum nr 2 im. św. Walentego w Bieruniu

Donald Tusk, the Poland’s Prime minister, was elected as President of the European Council for the period from 1 December 2014 until 31 May 2017. He replaced Herman Van Rumpuya from Belgium. Tusk is the first Polish politician who got so meaningful position in the European Union. On the international stage, he has gained recognition for leading Poland through the Continent's financial crisis. The country was the only EU member to avoid falling into recession in 2009 amid the global financial crisis.
Shortly after Tusk’s appointment was announced he told reporters: “This is a very important moment because I am convinced that my legacy, my personal experience and our European dreams can become an important source of energy. This energy is so important for the EU now and even more important in the future.”

Tusk referred to the coming European challenges as well: “The attitude to crises like Iraq, Ukraine and the European economic crisis determine who we (Europeans) are.”  “I believe that today there is no alternative to the European Union,” Tusk stressed.

We are proud of Mr. Tusk’s new role and we wish him many successful projects.
