By Marta Díaz Freire.
Ferrol
has been chosen, once again, as the setting for a film.
Last
February, Miguel Bardem, cousin of the popular Spanish actor Javier
Bardem (married to Penelope Cruz), was filming his new TV movie, '22
Angels', in Galicia.
The
plot is about a doctor, Francisco Javier Balmis, who discovered the
cure for smallpox. He injected the fluid into the arms of 22 orphans
and started a trip to America where he had planned to take the
children and, together with them, the cure for that illness.
The
voyage was carried out on the frigate María Pita (like the famous
heroine), which in this case was the replica of the Russian frigate
Shtandart, which Peter the Great, emperor of All Russia, ordered to
build by the beginning of the 18th century.
The
director of the film is Miguel Bardem and the main actors and
actresses are: the Galician actress María Castro, Pedro Casablanc as
Dr. Balmis and Octavi Pujadas as Dr. Salvany (Dr. Balmis' assistant).
The scriptwriter is Alicia Luna, winner of the Prize to the Best
European Script in 2004 (shared with Icíar Bollaín). The film is
based on the novel by Almudena de Arteaga, Guardian Angels and it is
co-produced by RTVE and Four Luck Banana. It counts with the
participation of the TVG and Sunrise Pictures as well.
A
casting to choose some extras was carried out in Ferrol. A guy at our
school took part in it but he unfortunately he wasn't chosen.
