IMMIGRATION

By Marcos Expósito Bello and Alfonso Martínez Ferreño.

About 400 immigrants have tried to enter the autonomous Spanish city of Melilla in an illegal way. They were trying to climb and jump the frontier fence from several different spots simultaneously and, at the same time, they were trying to avoid the security measures displayed by the Moroccan Auxiliary Forces and the Civil Guard on both sides of the frontier, which was reinforced by a helicopter from the army. The last try of fence jumping was on 31st October, when 300 immigrants tried to enter Melilla illegally but none achieved.
There have already been 64 tries of fence jumping along the current year. Over 14,000 Sub-Saharan immigrants have taken part in those attempts, amongst which about 2,000 have been able to overtake  the anti-intrusion devices.
The area where the autonomous city spreads is limited by two parallel metallic structures, 6 metres high, nowadays, and 12 kms. long, which borders the Spanish city, separating it from Morocco: the fence. Its construction was started by the mid 90s, when the number of arrivals of undocumented migrants coming from Sub-Saharan Africa multiplied itself.
They’ve spent more than 140 million euro on this mission.
