”Cumințenia
Pământului” (Wisdom of the Earth) reflects Brancusi's philosophy that has its roots
in an earlier Christianity Wisdom. The sculpture represents a woman very focussed
on herself, her figure carrying a mystery that has become a universal portrait.
The statue attitude emits a sense of attachment to Mother Earth.
The
sculpture was often interpreted as a strange deity, coming from the Romanian
mythology.
The
work was exhibited for the first time in 1910 in Bucharest and roused contradictory,
but eventually was accepted. It is made of
limestone crinoide using carving technique.
Romanian Government can
achieve the most valuable statue of Brancusi in 30 days
The
sculpture is currently estimated at approx. 20 million. It is part of a Bucharest
private collection, but was put up for sale. The Ministry of Culture was invited
to exercise the right of first refusal. After the first round of negotiations,
the Minister of Culture, Kelemen Hunor has not submitted any offer. There are 6
more buyers willing to purchase the sculpture if the Romanian government decides
not to buy.
"It
is still ranked in the "Thesaurus "and cannot beleave the country.
Whoever buys it, cannot take it outside the country. Any comments and any assessment
must be addressed from this point of view. There is no legal way for the statue
to leave Romania”, said Minister Kelemen Hunor.
He
also said that the document he received explicitly confirm that the owners want
to sell this sculpture. "It's about Paula Alina Ionescu and Şerbănescu,
two owners, who signed a contract of representation, for a period of six months,
with Artmark".
