Two oldies in the great final “Down Under”

By Karl-Johan Mattsson
The two best tennis players of all time met each other in a great battle in the Australian Open final. Who would have thought that?

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are both on their comeback road after a long time of injuries and setbacks. Many sport journalists and experts have counted them out for good. They have all said that their tennis carriers are on the way down. Neither Federer nor Nadal had the odds on their side. But they were strong, played very well and proved them all wrong.

These two great tennis players haven’t competed against each other in a Grand Slam final for many years and both of them were looking forward to play against each other again. The final was totally open for anyone of them to win, but the inside score between them was 23/11 to Rafael Nadal. Last time they met in an Australian Open final was in 2009 and at that time Nadal was the stronger player.

For the great final that took place on Sunday 29 January, Federer was the underdog and had nothing to lose but everything to win. Nadal, on the other hand, could play freely without the audience’s expectations, only his personal expectations and goals.

So how did it go in this great Grand Slam of 2017 “Down Under”?
Roger Federer got his revenge and won his eighteenth men’s single Grand Slam title by defending Rafael Nadal in a five-set match. It was his first major title since Wimbledon in 2012.
